| Quick Overview | Epithelial Barriers The epithelial cells are joined by the distinct intercellular junctions, known as the epithelial junctional complex. Once the junctional complex is compromised, the membrane loses its selective barrier and become susceptible to the entry of harmful agents, such as viruses into the bloodstream. All three, Zinc, Vitamin C and Vitamin D are essential for the integrity and homeostatis of the tight and adherens junction protein. Zinc, Vitamin C and Vitamin D are used to seal the intercellular spaces, which are responsible for the selective paracellular diffusion. Zinc and Vitamin D are also used to connect the actin filament bundles between the adjacent cells. 2. Cellular Defence Vitamin c is highly concentrated in leukocytes (White Blood Cells) and is used rapidly during infection. Vitamin C is able to modulate ROS, that are generated to kill pathogens and elevated during inflammation process. Vitamin D enhances the immune cells to get close (chemotaxis) and eat-up (phagocytosis) the pathogens. Zinc works as a second messenger in immune cells, It behaves like a signaling molecule (Zinc signals) to regulate immune cells. 3. Antibody Production Vitamin C increases the number of T-cells, B-cells and interferon. Vitamin D attaches to VDR (receptor) in T-cells to modulate cytokines and inflammation. ZInc increases the development and functions of T-cells and B-cells. |
