Probiotics - The Good Bacteria

what are probiotics?

It is good bacteria or yeast that lives in our body. Although some people may have the perception that bacteria are harmful germs, probiotic on the other hand are the opposite of that. It is live microorganism that give health benefits when consumed or applied to the skin. Probiotics can be found in products like fermented food, body lotion, skin care and dietary supplements. Do not confuse probiotic with prebiotic. Sometimes you might find probiotic supplements with added prebiotics.

What are prebiotics?

They are special plant fibres that help to feed and grow healthy bacteria in our guts. In other words, it is considered the source of food for the bacteria to grow and flourish in our gut system. In supplements, probiotics are usually taken by mouth. Their efficacy depends on how well they can stand up to the very acidic environment of the stomach and gastrointestinal tract. The highest quality probiotics will pass through your stomach still intact and move into the intestines where nutrients are absorbed.

So, did you know that not all probiotics are the same? There are many different strains of probiotics and they have different functions. Therefore, choosing the right strain and type of probiotic is important for specific outcomes wanted.

What are the benefits of taking probiotics?

1. It helps with gut health. Probiotics helps to restore the natural balance of gut bacteria. An imbalance of more bad bacteria than good bacteria in the gut can result in many health issues such as constipation, diarrhoea, excessive bloating and burping, and abdominal discomfort. There are also studies that show that probiotics help with irritable bowel syndrome.

2. It helps with women urogenital health. Like the intestinal tract, women’s urogenital also has a balanced ecosystem. However, the system can be thrown out of balance by a number of factors, including antibiotics, spermicides, and birth control pills. Certain strain of probiotics can help to restore the balance of microflora and tackle common female urogenital problems as bacterial vaginosis, yeast infection, and urinary tract infection.

3. Did you know that there is a strain of probiotic that helps you to lose weight? They work in different mechanisms that helps weight loss and reducing belly fat. For example, some probiotics prevent the absorption of dietary fat in the intestine which will be excreted out instead of being absorbed into our body. However, it’s important to be aware that not all probiotics aid in weight loss.

4. Probiotics may help to boost our immune system. Probiotics help to strengthen the body against pathogens through improved gut barrier function that stops harmful micro-organisms from entering the blood stream. This will result in building natural defence against pathogens getting to uncontrollable levels in the gut. It is also thought that some probiotics have the ability to support the function of white blood cells in the body. This is very useful especially in times of COVID 19, as many people are looking for supplements to boost immunity. Some studies have shown that the symptoms were not as severe in people who were taking probiotics and subsequently contracted COVID.

5. Lastly, probiotics can help with certain skin conditions. In some studies, eczema was reduced after taking probiotics. It is believed that probiotics helps to increase immunity and reduce inflammation which are the two key factors in the development of eczema.
